Why we look past the price tag

We are not here to make anyone want anything. We are here to make extraordinary numbers make sense.

The original cabinets of curiosities, such as Ole Worm's Museum Wormianum in 17th-century Copenhagen or the Habsburg Kunstkammer now shown at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, were attempts to make sense of a bewildering world by placing strange things side by side. Fablefjortempopand borrows the idea for a narrower bewilderment: the prices attached to extraordinary objects, homes and journeys.

What we do

We explain, through labour, provenance, scarcity and spectacle, why a thing costs what it does. We write for curious readers, not prospective buyers, and we keep a healthy distance from status marketing. You will not find affiliate links, sponsored rankings or "must-have" lists here.

How we handle numbers

  • Every price carries a currency, a date and a source type.
  • Documented sales, asking prices and estimates are labelled separately.
  • Auction results are given premium-inclusive unless stated otherwise.
  • Unconfirmed construction or valuation estimates are labelled or omitted.
  • We never present any figure as investment guidance.

About the pictures

Our flat vector illustrations are interpretive portraits of types of objects and spaces, drawn in the cabinet's espresso, amber and cream. Detail photographs are included for texture. Neither is presented as proof of any specific item's identity, authenticity or value.
